In 2010, an estimated 925 million people in the world were hungry or malnourished. Every day, more than 25,000 people around the world die of hunger or hunger-related causes. Recognising the urgency of this issue, the Taylor’s Education Group (TEG) pledged to contribute one million meals to feed the hungry, in conjunction with the World Food Day as part of its CSR project.
The TEG World Food Day 2011 which took place simultaneously across four campuses under the TEG umbrella – Taylor’s College Subang Jaya & Sri Hartamas, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus and Sri Garden Schools – saw more than 4,000 of volunteers from all walks of life and as young as 6 years old, contributing their time and energy for the benefit of the hungry all over the world.

The Multipurpose Hall at the Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus was divided into three main stations with different tasks – filling the bags with the dried food, checking on quality and sealing the bags, as well as counting and packing the bags into boxes.
Amidst upbeat music and a flurry of activities, the dedicated and diligent volunteers carefully scooped, weighed, packed and sealed the meal packets one by one. Loud cheers were heard from all corners of the hall as more and more boxes were filled-up and sealed, ready to be transported.

“This is the first time Taylor’s Education Group is taking part in a Meal Packaging Event, and our original target of getting 1,000 volunteers has exceeded beyond our expectations. We are pleased to have received such overwhelming response and support from all parties, including corporate sponsors, NGOs, members of the public, well-wishers, as well as our staff and students,” said Dato’ Loy Teik Ngan, Group CEO, Taylor’s Education Group.
“The TEG World Food Day is our way of contributing to one of the most urgent problems in today’s world – hunger and malnutrition. Although our contribution may be just a drop in the ocean towards solving world hunger, we believe that every drop counts. We also hope that the event has gone a long way to create awareness on the issue of hunger and malnutrition and bring it to the forefront,” added Dato’ Loy.

By the end of eight hours, a total of one million meals had been packed. With the collaboration with the American-based NGO, Stop Hunger Now (SHN), the finished food packs will be distributed to crisis-burdened areas or school feeding programmes locally and around the world including Somalia.
“Each meal packet contains six highly-nutritious dehydrated meals of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals, which can be augmented with local spices and flavours. This is what makes this event different from a regular donation drive, where public contribute dried provisions or food to a particular organization,” explained Ray Buchanan, Founder and International President of Stop Hunger Now (SHN), who has packaged and distributed over 51 million meals to 76 different countries since 2005.
